Adopt Mary

Mary was rescued by the COP Borneo team in February 2019 in Longgie, Berau, East Kalimantan. The villagers had kept Mary illegally since November 2018. They claim that they found her wandering alone near a main road so they felt pity for her and took her home. Mary was kept in a small wooden cage outside that was only 1.5m x 1m. She was only fed food that the family ate including rice, tempeh and fish.

Mary arrived at the COP Borneo Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre on 19 February and weighed only 6kg. She was estimated to be between one to two years of age and had 20 teeth. Mary showed behaviours of a wild orangutan since she had only been held captive for a few months. She was very agile and always keen to climb in her enclosure at the clinic during her quarantine period. Mary also showed nest building skills and used the branches and leaves given to her by the carers to build her own sleeping nests.

Mary joined forest school after her quarantine period was finished. The other young orangutans showed a great interest in Mary and interacted with her immediately. Mary greatly enjoys forest school and the carers have a difficult time in coaxing her back to the cage to sleep in overnight. Mary also has a good appetite and enjoys the variety of fruits and vegetables at COP Borneo with watermelon being one of her favourites.
